This course entitled Academic Debate is designed to help first year college students to acquire academic debate and critical thinking skills. Academic debate is not a stand-alone activity. It encompasses a wide range of other academic skills including research, data collection and analysis, argumentation, report writing, poster designing and presentation, asking and answering questions, critical and creative thinking etc.; therefore it helps students to acquire and develop all these skills in addition to gaining knowledge about different academic and real-world topics and issues. It also enhances their ability to listen to other people's opinions, agree or disagree and challenge other viewpoints in a structured and academic manner and try to persuade others of their viewpoints. This course will also help students gain public speaking kills, leadership skills, self-confidence, interpersonal, team work and group problem solving skills. Classroom debates provide students with the chance to work together in a collaborative and cooperative setting and encourage them to learn from each other. For the departments that teach the subject in English, the course will have the added value of improving the students' English language skills.
